Information collected automatically

When you use MathWorld, basic, first-party usage analytics are collected — things like which pages you visit, which buttons and lessons you interact with, and coarse device/browser information (e.g. "Chrome on macOS, mobile"). This is used only to understand which lessons and features are useful and to fix problems, never to build an advertising profile.

This analytics data is tied to a randomly generated identifier stored in your browser's local storage and session storage — not to your name, email, or any other identifying information, unless you separately choose to submit that information (for example, through the contact form described below).

Local storage

MathWorld stores small pieces of data directly in your browser (via local storage and session storage) to remember things like your anonymous visitor ID and, where applicable, your progress through a lesson. This data stays on your device and is not shared with anyone; clearing your browser's site data removes it.

The AI-generated solver

If you type your own question into the "ask a question" solver, that question text is sent to Google's Gemini API in order to generate a step-by-step lesson in response. Google's own privacy policy governs how that request is handled on their side. Avoid including personal information in a question you type in — only the maths question itself is needed to get a useful answer.

Contact form

If you use the contact form or email MathWorld directly, the name, email address, and message you provide are used only to respond to you. They are not sold, rented, or used for marketing.

Cookies and tracking

MathWorld does not run third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. The only client-side storage in use is the first-party local/session storage described above.

Children's privacy

MathWorld is a maths learning resource that may be used by students of any age, including children, typically under a parent's or teacher's supervision. No account creation or personal information is required to use the core lessons, worksheets, or solver. Do not enter personal information into any free-text field (such as the AI question box or contact form) on behalf of a child.
