Maths in Sports: Real Examples Kids Already Understand
Some of the most reluctant maths students I've taught have been sports-mad kids who didn't realise they were already doing maths every time they checked a league table or argued about who's the better player.
Sport is full of averages, percentages, and timing — the same skills from a maths lesson, just applied to something they already care about.
Working out an average score
A player scores 8, 12, and 10 points across three games. The average is found by adding the scores and dividing by how many games there were: (8 + 12 + 10) ÷ 3 = 30 ÷ 3 = 10 points per game.
Working out a win percentage
A team wins 6 out of 10 games played. As a percentage, that's 6 ÷ 10 = 0.6, or 60%.
Comparing race times
One runner finishes in 48.5 seconds, another in 50.2 seconds. The difference between them is 50.2 − 48.5 = 1.7 seconds.
Working out league points
In many league tables, a win is worth 3 points and a draw is worth 1 point. A team with 4 wins and 1 draw has scored 4 × 3 + 1 × 1 = 12 + 1 = 13 points.
Adding up scores from a game
A basketball player scores four shots worth 2, 2, 3, and 3 points. Their total for the game is 2 + 2 + 3 + 3 = 10 points.

Common mistakes I see in the classroom
The most common one when finding an average is forgetting to divide by the correct number of games, especially if a player missed one game partway through a season — always divide by the number of games actually played, not the total number scheduled.
Another frequent mistake with percentages is forgetting to multiply by 100 after dividing, leaving an answer as 0.6 instead of the correctly written 60%.
