How to Teach Long Division Step by Step
Long division is one of the first maths methods where students have to hold several steps in their head at once — divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, repeat. It's not that the arithmetic is hard; it's that the procedure has a lot of moving parts. Teaching it well usually means slowing down and making every one of those parts visible, rather than rushing to the final answer.
Start with what division bracket notation actually means
Before working through an example, it helps to make sure the notation itself makes sense: the number inside the bracket is the amount being split up (the dividend), and the number outside is how many groups it's being split into (the divisor). Everything else in long division is just a systematic way of answering 'how many groups fit, one digit at a time?'
The four-step cycle
- Divide: how many times does the divisor fit into the current part of the dividend?
- Multiply: multiply the divisor by that digit.
- Subtract: subtract the result from the current part of the dividend.
- Bring down: bring down the next digit and repeat.
Most students get stuck at the same two points: forgetting to bring down the next digit, or misjudging how many times the divisor fits (guessing too high or too low). Both are easier to catch when each step is written out in full rather than done mentally.
What to do with the remainder
Once every digit has been brought down and there's nothing left to divide, whatever is left over is the remainder. Depending on the problem, that remainder might be left as-is, turned into a decimal by continuing the division with a decimal point, or expressed as a fraction over the divisor.
